A Kenyan national was arrested for allegedly smuggling gold into the city. The accused is a cabin crew staffer with Kenyan Airlines and was found with 7.5 kg of gold bars worth Rs 2.25 crore.

On Saturday night, the anti-narcotics cell of Mumbai police arrested Teddy Mutuma Muthee (25), who is a crew member of Kenyan Airlines. Commenting on the matter, an officer from the anti-narcotics cell said, “On Saturday evening our sources informed us that a foreigner had come to stay at Hyatt Regency hotel in Sahar and that he was carrying drugs. We immediately formed a team, gathered all details and set off to arrest him.”

The official added, “We raided Hyatt Regency hotel on Saturday night and checked all equipment and baggage that Muthee was carrying. At that time, however, instead of drugs we found 7.5 kg of gold worth Rs 2.25 crore. When we asked him about how did he possess the gold and what he intended to do with it, he did not give any satisfactory answer.”

The official also said, “Muthee does not even have proper documents related to the gold that he had brought from Kenya. Prima facie it appears that the gold was smuggled by him from Kenya. We will hand him over to the customs officials along with the gold. They will take further action.”
