A 23-year-old woman was allegedly burnt to death by her husband after he suspected her of having an extramarital affair. The couple, residents of Virar, had gotten married two years ago.

The deceased woman was identified as Laxmi Wagh and the man was identified as Vijay Kishan Wagh (25). He was arrested by the Virar police on Friday night.

According to the police, the incident occurred late on Friday when the couple had a massive argument. “That night after he came back from work, he started arguing with her and then in a fit of rage doused her in kerosene and set her alight,” said an officer from Virar police station.

Neighbours of the couple rushed the woman to a local hospital from where she was sent to Shatabdi Hospital, Kandivali. The couple used to stay in Bhaiyya chawl locate din Barafpada area in Virar (east). The man ran a catering business while the woman was a housewife.

The woman, who sustained 50 per cent burns, succumbed to injuries on Saturday afternoon.

“The woman was apparently very good looking and the man was insecure about this. He was suspicious and scared she would leave him. He also thought that she was having an affair with someone and this would lead to constant fights between the two,” said an officer.

Wagh was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and remanded to custody.
