Hotels in K-East ward generate most garbage

Hotels in K-East wards, which include Andheri and Jogeshwari (east) areas, have found to be producing maximum amount of waste in the city.

Hotels in K-East wards, which include Andheri and Jogeshwari (east) areas, have found to be producing maximum amount of waste in the city. There are 108 hotels in this belt that generate 30 metric tonnes (MT) of waste every day.

According to civic officials, there are 2,421 hotels and restaurants in the city, which produce 282 MT of waste every day. The civic body collects waste from these hotels and restaurants only during the night, for which it has deployed 59 vehicles throughout the city.

According to civic data, the K-East ward — which includes Andheri and Jogeshwari (east) areas —with 108 hotels produces the maximum garbage (30 MT) in the city. It is followed by A ward (Colaba and Fort) with 130 hotels (26 MT) and K-West ward (Andheri West and Juhu) with 187 hotels (24 MT).

With 51 hotels, the E ward (Byculla) with 80 hotels and F-South ward (Parel, Wadala), are found to be producing the least amount of garbage (5 MT each) in the city.

The city daily produces 96,000 MT of garbage, which also includes waste from hotels and restaurants.

“We have been implementing a special drive to collect waste from city hotels and restaurants. Under this, conservancy workers are working in night shifts to collect the waste,” said an official from the solid waste management department.
