After the civic engineers called a strike threatening to resign en-masse if they were publicly humiliated for Mumbai’s bad roads, the corporators have now demanded a standard operating procedure to define their roles in order to keep a vigil on road works.

MNS corporator and group leader in the BMC, Sandeep Deshpande said at the standing committee meeting, “The engineers constantly blame us for bad roads, absolving themselves of all blame. If the corporators are really responsible, tell us what is expected of us so road works can happen smoothly.”

Mr Deshpande recently went to jail for allegedly forcing BMC chief engineer, roads, to hold a placard that read, “I am responsible for the city’s potholes.”

As the second part of the roads inquiry report, where 200 roads were examined by the three-member civic panel indicts 113 civic officials from the roads department will be published soon, Mr Deshpande accused engineers of setting up protests blaming other wings of the civic body, and absolving themselves of all blame.

Leader of the house Trushna Vishwasrao demanded that the administration, including municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and additional municipal commissioner of roads Sanjay Deshmukh, conduct field visits with corporators, to take stock of the roads.
