Commuters will now be able to access Wi-Fi facilities at stations such as Churchgate, Bandra, Dadar and Khar.
The system is expected to be launched from 11.30 am on Monday onwards.
However, the system that was earlier launched at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Mumbai Central has shown that there are still lots of details that need to be worked out.
One of the biggest problems in the system is the fact that it takes an average of three to four trials before a gadget can be connected to the Wi-Fi in the particular system. The network connects and disconnects every five minutes and commuters have to reconnect and resend the One Time Password (OTP) every few minutes. “The system was still being streamlined when the facility was launched at both CST and Mumbai Central. People were not able to connect to the Wi-Fi and we had to pull down the system for a few days and re-launch it again,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
This technological upgrade is important after the recent revelation that the state will use the railway infrastructure to usher in its own 1,500 hot spots.
The railways has extended help to the state and said that it will allow Rail-Net system to be used to further increase the availability of Internet in the city. The state is expected to launch 500 of these hotspots by November this year using the Rail-Net system.
