Fire breaks out at factory in Kanjurmarg

A major fire broke out at the Crompton Greaves factory in Kanjurmarg around 11 pm on Saturday. The factory is located amidst a thick settlement in Datar Colony in Kanjurmarg (east).

A major fire broke out at the Crompton Greaves factory in Kanjurmarg around 11 pm on Saturday. The factory is located amidst a thick settlement in Datar Colony in Kanjurmarg (east). The fire brigade was intimated at 11.10 pm and, within minutes, it rushed seven fire tenders to the spot. Around midnight, the fire brigade present at the spot reported a second fire alarm at 11.30 pm.

According to sources from the fire brigade, the damage was confined to a 3,000 square-foot-area that was a storehouse on the ground floor and the first floor of a three-storey building. The fire gutted mostly office furniture, server, cables, wires and other IT-related equipment.

The fire brigade reported a third alarm by midnight, and it took the 12 fire engines aver three hours to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control at about 3.30 am on Sunday. Cooling operations went on till late Sunday morning, an official from the fire brigade said.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had recently announced that the civic body must work towards decreasing fire mishaps and deaths resulting from fire accidents in Mumbai.

He announced that the BMC would undertake fire audits of over 6,500 structures in the city, and would tighten the noose on private agencies that provide no-object certificates to buildings for fire compliance.

Even though no lives were lost in this incident, it has occurred just three days after the announcement. The cause of the fire at the Crompton Greaves is yet to be determined and investigation is underway.
