Mumbai’s iconic 16-km-long Eastern Freeway will be shut on Saturday and Sunday nights for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to install speed restriction boards and thermoplastic rumblers to prevent accidents for the newly soon to be opened 250-metre ramp which has been constructed near the Wadala Truck Terminal (WTT). The ramp is expected to help motorists travelling from Wadala towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
“The work will be carried by the MMRDA with the help from traffic police department and according to the plans the MMRDA will carry out work for a period of four hours from starting from 12.00 am onwards,” said a MMRDA official.
The traffic department had conveyed to the MMRDA to install speed restriction boards to avoid accidents involving speeding vehicles.
The traffic department had earlier asked to install traffic signal on the newly constructed ramp in order to slow down the vehicles which will join the Freeway, but it was designed with a concept of not having any traffic signals on the whole stretch and thus MMRDA proposed to install speed restriction board,” the MMRDA official added.
The work will be carried out by the MMRDA at night, which will only last for four hours from 12 am to 4 am which could be extended up to 6 am on each day to complete the work within the two nights. “If the traffic department agrees to extend the time of shutting Freeway till 6 am, the MMRDA will work till that time to avoid any delay,” the MMRDA official added.
