A day after a railway protection force (RPF) head constable, Rahul Kamble (35), died of heart attack while handling protesting teachers in Aurangabad on Tuesday, the Maharashtra police flag was flown at half-mast at city police headquarters and Mumbai railway police headquarters in memory of the deceased constable.

The move was undertaken as a mark of respect for the exemplary service shown by Kamble during his stint at Aurangabad. Satish Mathur, director general of police, Maharashtra, made the announcement about flying the state police flag at half-mast.

Kamble, who was head constable with Mumbai railway police and posted at Borivali railway station, had been deployed to Aurangabad along with additional forces as a crowd control measure during the ongoing protests there. Sources said that on Tuesday, Kamble had been posted as security near the Aam Khas grounds.

An Aurangabad police officer said, “He was posted there as there were a huge number of protesters, and we didn’t want to take chances. Suddenly, the mob started pelting stones.”
