The Kasturba Marg police has nabbed a couple for cheating and assaulting a jewellery dealer of Rs 3 lakh and his gold ornaments. While the arrest was made on April 29, the accused were presented to court on Sunday and have been remanded to police custody till Tuesday.
The couple — Nagnath Shedge (33) and his wife Anjana Shedge (30) —had lured a Bhayander-based jewellery shop owner by telling him that that they had come across some gold while ploughing their filed in their village. The couple claimed that they wanted to avoid hassles and offered to sell it off to him at a lower price. Agreeing to the deal, on April 17, the businessman accompanied the accused to a village near Pandharpur in Solapur district carrying Rs 3 lakh cash with him in order to pay them for the gold that was claimed to have been found. On reaching the village, however, the couple first assaulted the dealer and then robbed him of the valuables that he had been carrying, including his gold chain and ring.
The victim approached Kasturaba Marg police station on Wednesday and registered a complaint. During investigation, the police received a tip off that Anjana was travelling to Pandharpur from Mumbai. They informed the local police and Anjana was detained late on Thursday.
The Kasturba Marg police got her custody on Friday and during the interrogation she revealed the whereabouts of her husband, who was nabbed from Ulhasnagar on Friday.
Police sources have said that it is likely that the couple had used the same modus operandi on other people and are checking their records to ascertain the same.
The police also said that Shedge has a case of cheating registered against him in Pune as well.
