With the BJP making its intentions clear to support the recreational ground-playground (RGPG) policy, the controversial policy is finally likely to be passed in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) house on Wednesday.

“If all our doubts are cleared by the civic administration, we will support the RGPG policy,” said BJP group leader Manoj Kotak. The new RGPG policy has already been cleared by the BJP-led civic improvements committee and was supposed to be tabled before the civic general body meeting for final approval in November last year. However, the city BJP president Ashish Shelar demanded that the policy should be reconsidered owing to growing opposition from several quarters. Faced with lack of majority due to BJP’s opposition, the ruling Shiv Sena had no choice, but to defer the policy.

The policy will now come up for discussion in the civic house on Tuesday. Mr Kotak said, “There are certain questions that we would be raising for which we need answers from the BMC commissioner. If our questions are given a satisfactory answer we would lend our support to the policy.” However, other parties in the BMC have vowed to continue their opposition to the policy.

MNS group leader Sandeep Deshpande said, “The civic body has sufficient funds to maintain the RGPG’s by itself and does not need to give it out to any corporates or even to resident associations for maintenance.”
