A constable was arrested after he allegedly accepted Rs 8 lakh in bribes from two brothers after promising them a flat at Kumbharwada, Chembur, under a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme. The Chembur police registered a case against him on Monday.

The constable, identified as a Matunga resident Subhash Babar, worked with the crime branch till 2011 and had a bad record. He was arrested along with five others in connection with a robbery case that was registered in the LT Marg police station.

In 2013, Babar promised to help complainant Mohanbhai Kukrecha get a flat at the Kumbharwada SRA project in Chembur. For that work he was accepted bribes from Kukrecha and his brother totally worth '8 lakh in instalments.

Speaking about the case, Chembur police officials said, “After accepting the bribes, neither did he help Kukrecha get a flat nor did he return the money. After waiting for three years, the brothers decided to file complaint in the police station regarding the same last month.”

DCP Shahaji Umap said, “We had to first inquire about the complaint and after we received confirmation about the crime we registered an FIR against Babar. We have registered a case under Sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.”
