Filmmaker Karan Johar, actors Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Ranvir Singh and other celebrities got relief from the Bombay high court on Wednesday as it directed the police to defer filing of chargesheet against these persons in connection with a criminal case registered for vulgarity and obscenity during the AIB Roast show.

The division bench of Justice R.V. More and Justice V.L. Achilya has asked the police to defer filing of chargesheet till February 9, when the court has posted this matter to be heard.

Padukone and others have filed petitions in the HC seeking quashing of the FIR registered by the Tardeo police. Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani argued before the court that none of the 4,000 people who were present in the show complained about any foul language. He also argued that this was a show which was attended by people by invitation or buying tickets and even the video available on website has a disclaimer so whoever watched it is by choice, so no case could be made out.

He said the only question is whether the language used in the show was vulgar or obscene and till this is decided by the court, the police should be asked not to file a chargesheet. On the petitioners’ request, the court has extended relief granted to them. Last year, the high court had restrained the police from taking any ‘coercive’ action in the case in response to a petition filed by Karan Johar.

The police registered the FIR for alleged use of obscene and abusive language at the ‘roast’ comedy show staged in Mumbai in2014.
