While the six firms facing criminal charges for shoddy road works continue to be a part of road works in the city, Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar on Saturday demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) probe the missing clause in the tender documents of blacklisting contractors from road works.

This clause, according to Mr Shelar, could have been done to save tainted contractors.

“The BMC should punish the officials who have deliberately not kept such a clause in the tender documents where if a contractor is blacklisted he or she should not be awarded any contracts further,” he said.

The BMC’s inquiry report on the road scams had identified six contractors — RPS Infraprojects, KR Construction, J Kumar Infra, Relcon Infraprojects, RK Madhani and Mahavir Construction for failing to meet the quality standard followed by BMC chief Ajoy Mehta. Hence, the BMC officials were directed to blacklist these contractors.

The inquiry report also resulted in the civic body suspending two chief engineers.

The BMC had collected 34 samples for tests in which it was found that the contractors had used substandard material.

The opposition MNS in the BMC had also in the past demanded that the BMC discontinue to award new contracts to guilty contractors.
