The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s announcement of the electoral ward boundaries and ward reservations for the 2017 civic polls on Monday has led to most prominent corporators and party leaders losing their wards, either to ward realignment or to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe reservations.

Some of the big names who have lost their wards include leader of the opposition Pravin Chheda, whose ward in Ghatkopar got divided into two, while leader of the ruling BJP Manoj Kotak’s ward in Mulund split into three separate electoral wards.

The announcement affected 80 per cent of the 227 electoral wards in the city.

Other leaders who lost their wards include former leader of the opposition Devendra Ambekar (to reservation), along with MNS leader from Dadar Sandeep Deshpande, and NCP leader Dhananjay Pisal.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament and Shiv Sena corporator Rahul Shevale has also lost his ward to reservation. Other affected corporators include MNS’s Santosh Dhuri and Manish Chavan.

The BMC also announced reservations for the SC, ST and OBC categories, with 15 wards reserved for the SC category, eight of which have been reserved for women; two wards for the ST category, one of which has been reserved for an ST woman, and 61 for the Backward Caste category, of which 31 are for women. The remaining 75 fall in the open category.

The island city has lost seven electoral wards to the suburbs, as the A, B, C, D, and E wards in south Mumbai losing one electoral ward each, and the G/south ward losing two electoral wards. Five wards have been added to the western suburbs, which now has a total of 102 wards instead of the previous 97. Similarly, two wards have been added to the eastern suburbs, which now has 69 wards instead of the previous 67.
