Even four months after the murder of a middle-aged woman whose corpse was found in two suitcases near Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, the Deonar police and crime branch officials have neither been able to identify the victim nor find out who is responsible for the crime. The police has now announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 in a bid to identify the woman who was found murdered.

Around 800 people have been questioned and eight missing people were traced in the past four months as the police tried to ascertain the identity of the dead woman.

The police had found the corpse in two suitcases with a severed hand next to it in December 2015 on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road. As the body’s face was decomposed, no one has been able to identify the woman. The police had released a sketch of the woman, but is yet to get any useful lead.

Taking the case on priority, the police has formed a special team that is trying to establish the victim’s identity and nab those responsible.

The police has also conducted DNA tests on more than 10 persons to whose family they believed the woman must have belonged to, in the Kalina Science Forensic Laboratory.

Commenting on the development in the case, senior police inspector (from Deonar police station, Dattatrey Shinde, said, “We have rounded up all tourist bus drivers, outside vehicles driver and auto, taxi drivers too, but no one had any connection with this case. The sketches of this woman have been drawn and circulated to each and every police station of Mumbai and its adjoining districts like Navi Mumbai, Thane, etc.”

“Our special team has kept a close tab on this case and they are taking daily updates from most of the police stations,” Mr Shinde added.

“We have announced Rs 25,000 cash reward if anyone will provide us information regarding this woman. Our team has visited places like Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, etc in search of her identity,” he further said.

The police had found a Taweez (religious thread) on the right hand of the lady’s body. Accordingly more than 50 tantriks were interrogated in this connection but they have failed to give any useful information so far.
