23-year-old rider dies after head hits divider, two hurt

The decision to take a bike out for a night spin to Worli seaface left one youngster dead and two critically injured after they met with an accident.
The youngsters, identified as Swagat Lokhande (23), Krishna Gawade (22) and Viraj Parab (22), were riding triple seat on a motorbike owned by Lokhande. A resident of Byculla, Swagat had gone to Matunga to visit Krishna and Viraj. In the early hours of Sunday, the trio decided to visit Worli sea face and all of them hopped on to Lokhande’s bike.
The incident occurred opposite Poddar Hospital near Siddharth Nagar in Worli. “At about 4 am, the rider of the bike lost control and hit the divider. Lokhande, who was riding the bike, was declared dead before he could be admitted to the hospital. The other two are recuperating,” said an officer of the Worli police station. The police has also recovered the Karizma, which is in a mangled state. “Eye witnesses say that the rider hit his head on the divider, leading to him dying instantly. We are waiting for the post mortem report to determine the exact cause of death,” he said.
Sources said that while Lokhande was carrying a helmet, he was not wearing it at the time of the accident. “The other two have suffered a fracture on their leg and also head injuries. They have been admitted to Nair Hospital,” the officer added. The police will be investigating whether the youngsters were in an intoxicated state.
