Two inmates of Arthur Road jail were on Thursday, allegedly involved in a fight, leading to injuries. According to officials, the fight ensued after one inmate identified as Salim Faizal Khan attacked another inmate — Gopal Shetty.

Sources said the incident happened around 11.30 am, when Shetty was being taken to the hospital for a check up. Khan allegedly attacked Faizal outside barrack number 7 of the jail.

This is the second such incident in the jail. A fortnight ago, five undertrials were involved in a fight after which all of them had to be hospitalised.

Sources said Khan used a blade to attack Shetty. “He made gashes on the left side of Shetty’s forehead and also his right elbow,” said an officer. Shetty retaliated with blows, causing minor injuries to Faizal.

Officials rushed in within minutes after the fight started to separate the two. “There was a previous dispute between them. After the incident, both were injured and taken to JJ Hospital for treatment,” said the officer.

“No one sustained grievous injuries and we are still investigating the incident,” said Ashok Dudhe, Mumbai police spokesperson.

Shetty (35), a known gangster, was arrested last year for being involved in organised crimes in the city. Khan is serving time for an attempt to murder case registered against him at Nirmal Nagar police station.
