The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro-1 corridor, the world’s eighth densest corridor has witnessed a 16.4 per cent of an overall average daily increase in its ridership in the past one year. The Airport Road Metro station witnessed the highest growth of 31 per cent increase in daily ridership and Versova Metro station the least growth, which is not even one per cent.

However, the Ghatkopar Metro station continued to witness the maximum commuter footfall daily, followed by Andheri Metro and so on.

The Mumbai Metro-1 completed two years on Tuesday for which the operator Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) had taken many initiatives like going green and offering discounts on shopping to commuters to increase its ridership, which was on an average, 2,59,242 daily last year. This has increased by 16.24 per cent to 3,01,351 daily as of today.

Commenting on the same, Abhay Kumar Mishra, chief executive officer, MMOPL, said, “We had expected an normal increase of around 3 to 4 per cent but the response has been great so far and so has been our services. The Mumbai Metro has a punctuality record comparable with the best in the world with 99.99 per cent trains arriving on time.”

Further, the monthly revenue of the Mumbai Metro from all sources is around Rs 17 to Rs 18 crore and the monthly operation and maintenance cost is Rs 14 core.
