At least 11 doctors from two civic-run hospitals have tested positive for dengue, hospital sources said on Thursday.

According to the civic body, the cases of dengue reported in 2016, so far — 296 — was higher than the corresponding figures for 2015, which was 248.

Three doctors at KEM Hospital and eight medicos from the Sion Hospital have contracted dengue, sources have confirmed.

Civic health statistics show the incidence of dengue viral fever was increasing in the city with every passing week. While there were 248 confirmed dengue cases reported in September last year, this month has already seen the number increase to 296.

According to the latest figures that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released, 3,287 patients with symptoms of dengue were admitted to civic hospitals this year.

Dr Avinash Supe, director of major BMC hospitals, said, “The doctors are under treatment and they are doing good. They are recovering and have been given proper treatment and medicines.”

Dr Om Shrivastav, director of the department of infectious disease, said, “Cases of dengue, malaria and viral fever are on the rise. However, it is a vector-borne disease. The BMC should probe the reasons for this.”
