10th spot for Mumbai in Swachh poll

Mumbai, which was ranked as low as 147 in the cleanliness survey conducted in 2014, has jumped up to the tenth rank this year in the Swachh Sarvekshan, 2016 survey.

The city has also been awarded as the “best performer” among mega cities. The survey was part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and was commissioned across 73 cities. The last cleanliness survey was conducted in 2014 among 476 cities with a population of one lakh and above.

Minister of urban development M. Venkaiah Naidu presented awards to these cities. BMC additional municipal commissioner Pallavi Darade — in charge of the city’s solid waste management —received the award on behalf on the civic body. She said, “The general cleanliness level has been improved in the last one year. We realised that we have the resources in place and put in our best efforts as a team.

We were also aware of the modalities involved and what are the areas we would be concentrating on. From group sweeping to door-to-door collection of waste. we tried our best to keep the city clean.”

To ensure cleanliness, civic chief Ajoy Mehta has asked civic official to implement several sanitation measures. The local assistant municipal commissioners across the 24 wards have been instructed to take repeated rounds in order to ensure that the city remains clean. They have also been told to ensure cleanliness on roads and footpaths.

The top 10 cities in terms of sanitation and hygiene in order of rank are: Mysuru, Chandigarh, Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), New Delhi Municipal Council, Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Surat, Rajkot, both in Gujarat, Gangtok (Sikkim), Pimpri Chindwad and Greater Mumbai, both from Maharashtra.

The bottom 10 cities are: Kalyan Dombivili (ranked 64), Varanasi, Jamshedpur, Ghaziabad , Raipur, Meerut, Patna, Itanagar, Asansol and Dhanbad.
