Mumbai: An Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court on Thursday sentenced a former senior police inspector of Dindoshi police station to a year’s rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him for taking bribe to not make the complainant an accused in a Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) case in 2013. The accused was allegedly caught taking Rs 50,000 in cash, which was the first instalment of the total bribe amount of Rs 2 lakh, in the police station.

According to the investigating officer, ACP Nitin Tadakhe, the ACB, on May 3, 2014, had arrested Jaywant Mane, senior PI of Dindoshi police station, for accepting a bribe of Rs 50, 000 from the accused. Mane was arrested on the complaint of a man who alleged that on April 30, the social service branch, along with the local police, had conducted a raid on a gambling den in Dindoshi. Some persons, including the complainant, were detained at the time.

The complainant claimed he was present near the den because he was looking for an employee of his who was missing for a few days. The complainant alleged that though his name did not appear anywhere, Mane demanded Rs 5 lakh from him and threatened to frame him if he didn’t pay. Ultimately the complainant agreed to pay Rs 1.5 lakh and lodged a complaint with ACB. Later, ACB sleuths arrested Mane at the police station itself when he was accepting the cash in his chamber.
