Mumbai: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) over the “urban naxals” controversy. All allegations against the Maharashtra government and the police stood rejected with this verdict, he said.

The links between the underground Maoists and their urban supporters were now open and the police would take the case to its logical conclusion, he said. His government would ask the police to take further precaution while addressing press conferences, as in this case, the SC had taken strong objection to the Maharashtra police.

“The Pune police’s action against the Urban Naxals had been supported by the SC. It was also clear now that the arrested persons were in touch with banned Maoist organisations and had been conspiring against the nation for a long time,” said Mr Fadnavis.

The CM added, “With the direction of the SC, it has also been established that these people were trying to spread unrest among the society. They were trying to create conflicts between communities. I thank the court for giving this verdict.”

About the presser addressed by additional director general of police (law and order), Param-veer Singh, and the strictures the court had pass-ed for it, Mr Fadnavis took a cautious stand. “If the court has given such direction, then we will certainly follow it. That time it was necessary to bring the police’s side be-fore the people as many so-called liberals, pseudo-liberals were trying to cr-eate an impression agai-nst the police action. Ho-wever, the issue is not ab-out the police conference but the conspiracy agai-nst the nation and that is more serious,” said Mr Fadnavis.

Mr Fadnavis also appealed to political parties not to politicise a crucial matter such as national security. “I want to say that the opposition to this case was political. But, I also want to request them that now the SC has taken a stand. Now, do not make this issue political.”
