Mumbai: A special court in Thane has sentenced six men to five years’ imprisonment for abetting the suicide of a girl in 2009. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 8,000 on each convict. The court, however, acquitted two women in connection with the case, giving them the benefit of doubt.

The accused men had allegedly assaulted and abused the girl’s family in a brawl in May 2009 after which she ended her life by consuming poison.

G.P. Shirsat, special judge for SC/ST offences, held all six accused guilty under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Those awarded punishment are Sandip Shrikant Dhonde (33), Suresh Baban Sanas (49), Rajendra Baban Bhor (51), Vilas Baban Sanas (46), Ratnakar Rambhau Aaute (47) and Kumar Vasant Gole (31).

The victim’s mother, in her police complaint, said that on May 4, 2009, when she was on her way to the family-owned clothes’ shop, she spotted some boys throwing mud and stones into the water tank of her house in Koparkhairane. She reprimanded them and headed towards the shop. After she returned home that night, one of the women in the locality picked up a quarrel with the him. The accused men, too, joined in and attacked the victim’s mother and her family members, including her husband and children. They also used “bad words” against the her and their community, the prosecution said.

Due to constant harassment and humiliation by the accused, the girl consumed poison and ended her life, following which, the accused were booked.
