Demand for Maratha reservation was made long back during the 1980's. Then Annasaheb Patil, leader of Mathadi Kamgar Union from various APMC markets was the prominent leader of this demand.

Mumbai: To avoid any untoward incident following the verdict on Maratha reservation, heavy security was deployed outside the high court.

Nevertheless, despite the heavy police bandobast however, nearly a hundred protesters shouted slogans outside the gate and waved saffron flags. The police immediately took action against them.

There was a possibility of a law and order situation in the wake of the verdict on Maratha reservation as both those supporting and opposing the decision were expected to be present inside and outside the Bombay high court at the same time. Around 100 policemen were deployed outside and around the court to tackle any untoward incident.

Since the judgment was in favour of reservation, there was celebration outside the high court. Petitioners and members and supporters of various Maratha organisations raised slogans such as “Ek Maratha Lakh Maratha” (One Maratha is equal to one lakh Marathas) near the high court gate. The situation was such that the police had to step in to restrain people from sloganeering and waving saffron flags.
