State education dept mulls asking FYJC applicants to confirm seats.

College names should be selected only if the student is willing to take admission in it.

Mumbai: The admission process of the first year junior college (FYJC) students is likely to get a makeover for the next academic year 2018-19. The state education department is mulling over asking students to confirm their seats and secure admission after their name is selected by the admission portal according to their location and marks. Last year, the department conducted eight rounds of admission and still 30 students were left without a seat.

During the admission process last year, the state government introduced a format called ‘preference list’ in which the students could fill names of preferred colleges. Once the form was submitted, the portal would scrutinise these colleges according to the students’ selected location and marks and allocate them seats.

However, during the procedure, the students were confused. They were unsure whether to get admission in the college allotted to them or wait for better options.

“What they never understood even after explaining it several times is that once their name has appeared in any of the lists, they are out of the admission system and their name cannot be listed again,” said an official at the department.

In order to avoid confusion like last year, they will be sent a link to their registered mobile numbers which will ask the student if they have secured admission or are they planning to wait for better college in the next round.

“Once the student confirms through the link to the system that he or she did not take admission, the student won’t be removed out of the admission process. But if the admission is secured, the name of the student shall be no longer in the following rounds making space for other students,” the official added.

This move is important to make the process more student friendly.

In order to explain the new process to the students in a detailed manner, the department is planning to start the admission process early as compared to last year.

“We will ask the colleges to start the data collection process and other arrangements from February itself and not wait till April. The preparations will be better,” the official said.

He added, “Now, a class 10 students will be explained in an easier manner along with their parents with the help of representation so they can fill the form and understand the process quickly.”
