Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) and Bombay high court-appointed mangrove committee has confirmed flooding in the villages of Uran.

Members of the mangrove committee also claimed destruction of wetlands to be a major cause of flooding in the Kunde village.

The Asian Age had earlier reported that villages in Uran district, including Funde Gaon, Nawghar Gaon, Kunde Gaon and Bhedkhar Gaon, have been witnessing continuous flooding, which according to the activists, is due to landfill activities in the wetlands.

The deputy conservator of forests has directed the state mangrove cell and the Konkan commissioner to take appropriate action against the reclamation of wetlands.

Meanwhile, CIDCO officials stated that as many as 15 villages in the Uran district are at risk of flooding during monsoon.

“A detailed plan is being prepared to curb the flood-like situation in the villages. We are also invested into mulling closing the sluice gates at Panje area during the monsoon so that the situation does not get aggravated and become worse,” said Pramod Patil, environment officer at CIDCO.
