Mumbai: The saffron alliance has wrested the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which comprises Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena has registered a victory in 30 out of 36 seats in Mumbai and won 13 of 18 seats in Thane. While of the six seats in Palghar district, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) registered a victory in three seats, Sena, CPI(M) and NCP have recorded one seat each.

The alliance has perfor-med fairly well in Mumbai with the BJP winning 16 seats and the Sena bagging 14. The Maha Aghadi, Congress-NCP-Samajwadi Party alliance, has won six seats in Mumbai.

The Congress got four seats in Mumbai, the NCP and the SP each won a seat. Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, who made history by becoming the first member of his family to take the poll plunge, has marked his arrival in politics.

The 29-year-old next-gen Thackeray won with a thumping majority from Mumbai’s Worli constituency. The party, however, lost its stronghold — Bandra East seat.

The Sena had fielded Mumbai mayor Vishwa-nath Mahadeshwar who lost to Congress’ Zeeshan Siddiqui — son of former minister and Congress leader Baba Siddiqui. Mr Zeeshan is the youngest candidate in the fray.

Mr Mahadeshwar lost owing to the rebel candidate Trupti Sawant, who was sitting MLA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had held a last joint poll rally in the last week in the same constituency.

Moreover, the Saffron alliance wrested power from AIMIM’s incumbent Waris Pathan from Byculla seat in south Mumbai. Shiv Sena’s Yamini Yashwant Jadhav defeated Mr Pathan.

BJP Mumbai president Mangal Prabhat Lodha retained the prestigious Malabar Hill constituency in South Mumbai for the 6th consecutive term polling 75.86 per cent of the total votes cast, the highest percentage of votes in Mumbai.

He received 93,458 votes out of 1,23,186 votes cast, defeating his Congress opponent by a margin of almost 71,813 votes.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s campaigning for BJP’s Ramesh Singh Thakur proved to be ineffective as Mr Thakur lost Malad (west) seat to Congress leader Aslam Shaikh.

In a neck-and-neck competition in the Chandivali constituency, Shiv Sena candidate Dilip Lande defeated four-time Congress MLA and former minister Arif (Naseem) Khan by just 409 votes.     

Mumbai’s NCP president and spokesperson Nawab Malik, meanwhile, defeated the Shiv Sena candidate and sitting MLA Tukaram Kate from Anushakti Nagar.

Amin Patel of Congress also managed to retain his Mumba Devi seat.

The Samajwadi Party president and sitting MLA Abu Asim Azmi from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency has managed to retain his seat.

Out of 18 seats of Thane district, the BJP has managed to bag eight seats, the Sena won five seats, NCP managed two seats, while SP and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and an independent Geeta Jain, a BJP rebel, had won one seat each.  

Ms Jain defeated BJP candidate and sitting MLA Narendra Mehta in Mira-Bhayander seat.

NCP leader and sitting legislator Jitendra Awhad has once again won the seat from Kalwa-Mumbra Assembly constituency seat defeating Shiv Sena candidate Deepali Sayed.

In Palghar district, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance suffered a big jolt, as the BJP could not win a single seat. The Sena candidate Shrinivas Chintaman Vanga, however, managed to retain Palghar.

Hitendra Thakur-led Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) has managed to win three seats out of six seats of Palghar. BVA has won Vasai, Nalasopara and Boisar.

Former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma lost to BVA candidate Kshitij Thakur from Nalasopara.

Sharma, the Shiv Sena candidate from Nalasopara, lost by 34,000 votes to Bahujan Vikas Aghadi candidate Kshitij Thakur, who retained the seat. Mr Thakur has won by 43,703. NCP candidate Rajesh Raghunath Patil has won from Vikramgad seat, which was a BJP bastion.
