Mumbai: Mumbai saw a very little number of immersions of Ganesha idols in the artificial ponds during Ganesh Chaturthi this year as compared to the immersions in the natural water bodies. However, the nu-mber of immersions in the artificial ponds has increased this year as compared to last year, according to the Brihan-mumbai Municipal Corp-oration (BMC) report. This year, as many as 34,584 idols were immersed in the artificial ponds across the city.

There were 34 artificial ponds across the city, where 32,959 idols from residential societies, 843 idols from mandals and 782 idols of Goddess Gauri were immersed in the artificial ponds. However, the immersions at artificial ponds were only around 14 per cent of the total 2,41,904 idols immersed in the sea, rivers, lakes and natural ponds.

“It will take time to change the mindset of people to celebrate in more eco-friendly way,” said a BMC official.
