Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) has earned more than Rs 1 crore after selling abandoned vehicles through auction and by collecting fines from the owners of such cars. The civic body has auctioned off more than 2,000 such vehicles. This move to auction abandoned vehicles came after the BMC received complaints about such vehicles cramming the streets and posing a security threat in some areas.

The abandoned vehicles were lifted off the streets by the BMC in the period between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.

In the auction held on August 23, it managed to auction 2,787 of the 3,000 vehicles, which were captured by it under various circumstances. Through this sale, the civic body earned Rs 94 lakh.

Apart from this, more than Rs 40 lakh was collected as fines from the owners who failed to collect their vehicles within the stipulated period. The civic body had given owners a 40-day time period to collect their respective vehicle.

Of the 3,000 vehicles, 901 were four-wheelers and 300 were three-wheelers or autos. Around 612 vehicles were taken back by the owners themselves by paying the respective fine. Of the 600 vehicles, 193 were two-wheelers, 50 were three-wheelers and 369 were four-wheelers.
