Mumbai borrows central grid’s power to keep cool

Mumbai: With growing heat and humidity, the demand for electricity has gone up in Mumbai. So much so, on an average, an additional 1,000 mw has to be taken from the central grid to meet increasing need. Electricity demand for the state of Maharashtra had reached 19,330 mw earlier this month, which has now normalised to 17,000 to 18,000 mw.

On Wednesday, May 24, demand for electricity in the city touched 3,421 mw and 1,066 mw had to be taken from the central grid to meet the need. On May 23, demand was 3,481 mw and 1,678 mw had to be borrowed from the central grid. On May 21, demand was 2,371 mw and the city took 1,234 mw from the central grid.

Furthermore, the state demand for electricity is between 17,000 mw and 18,000 mw and the state power distribution company is also borrowing from the central grid. It has claimed that there is no load shedding in the state. “Demand from the agricultural sector was about 25 to 30 per cent; from the industrial-commercial sector was 30 to 40 per cent; and the rest was residential. There was no load shedding conducted even during peak time,” an official said.
