Mumbai: The Pune police is probing into a rape and murder case of a seven-year-old girl whose body was found on Wednesday in the campus of the College of Military Intelligence (CMI) at Dapodi. Sometime later the police also found body of the suspect hanging to a tree in the same premises.

The man allegedly committed suicide and the officers are now probing if he was involved in the sexual assault and murder of the juvenile girl.

The investigation revealed that the man was allegedly having an affair with the girl’s mother and that he could have targeted the juvenile after she turned down his request to marry her mother.

“The man and the mother of the victim work in the CME’s mess as civil staff and resided on the same premises. After the girl was found unconscious on Tuesday, her mother informed the police. She was then taken to state-run hospital near the campus, where doctors found that she was sexually assaulted and then strangulated,” said an officer of Pune police.

The woman and accused came in contact after her husband died some months ago. He later put up proposal to marry her, which she turned down. The duo had a squabble on Monday night when he threatened her of dire consequences.

“Since he was the prime suspect in the case, we started tracing his location. During the search, we found his body hanging from a tree on the CME premises,” the officer added.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including murder and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further investigation is underway.
