Mumbai: Giving relief to the common man ahead of Assembly elections in five states, oil companies reduced petrol and diesel prices by 30 and 28 paise respectively. Fuel prices reduced on the fifth consecutive day in a row.

Petrol had crossed the rs 90 per litre mark recently in Mumbai and the diesel price touched Rs 80. Considering the elections in five states, the Union government and oil companies reduced the price by Rs 5 per litre and the state government also reduced taxes. Though fuel prices increased in the international market, oil companies provided small relief and reduced the prices on the fifth day in a row.

In Mumbai, petrol was sold at Rs 86.91 per litre and diesel at Rs 78.54 per litre. In Parbhani, fuel prices were at the highest in the state. Petrol was being sold at Rs 88.67 and diesel at Rs T78.82, said officials.

Elections in the Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram will be held in November and December this year. Diwali will be celebrated next month.

“The increase in fuel prices inevitably leads to an increase in inflation. So, the government is trying to reduce fuel prices and the state government is also thinking of giving further relief to the people,” a source, who preferred to remain anonymous told The Asian Age.
