Mumbai: In the next two or three months, railway commuters will be able to book tickets for suburban services by using their credit/debit cards.

The retrofitted point-of-sale (PoS) devices are to be tested by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and will soon be installed on the automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs).

At present, commuters book tickets on ATVMs by using smart cards. However, all commuters do not have smart cards but they do have credit/debit cards. The CRIS will test PoS devices with ATVMs internally at its headquarters.

Uday Bobhate, general manager, CRIS, said, “Internal testing is underway. If we come across any problem pertaining to application, we will report to our headquarters in Delhi. They will work on it and resolve the problem and again, it will be tested.”

Mr Bobhate said that the ATVMs would be given to the railway to operate.
