Mumbai: A two-day-old infant’s body was found floating in a lake near Thane central prison on Sunday afternoon, the police said. The infant’s gender could not be identified as fish had nibbled the body beyond recognition. The body has now been sent for conducting a postmortem to ascertain the cause of death.

The incident came to light after a passer-by saw something floating in the lake around 12:30 pm and informed the Thane police control room.

“The body was decomposed to a great extent. There are no CCTV cameras in the area. We are however trying to identify who dumped the infant in the lake,” said an officer from Thane Nagar police station, which is probing the incident.  

The police is trying to search for any eyewitnesses who may have seen the act of disposing of the body in the lake, officials said.

An abandonment complaint has been recorded with the Thane Nagar police station. However, the officials will file an FIR under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) as per the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unknown persons.
