Mumbai: The Congress Wednesday alleged that Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, had shared a doctored video and fake information about the countrywide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan accused Mr Fadnavis of posting online “tampered videos” of the protest by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students.

Mr Chavan in a tweet said, “It is sad to see that former CM @Dev_Fadnavis is spreading doctored videos out of desperation. He or his office must check the veracity of these videos. As a former home minister and responsible Leader of the Opposition, he must restrain from spreading hateful and possibly fake information [sic].”

Mr Chavan also tagged a report of Alt News, which said that students of the Uttar Pradesh-based Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) had not raised “anti-Hindu" slogans during their protest against the amended Citizenship Act 2019.

Mr Chavan’s tweet garnered huge response from Twitter users, who criticised and supported both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders.

One Twitter user said, “The truth is that the BJP is built on spreading lies, fake news and creating hatred and mistrust in society. Mr Fadnavis as a loyal soldier is following the template of his party [sic].”

Another user tweeted, “He is not sharing doctored videos. We all have seen these videos. It’s you the politicians who are always shielding the enemies within [sic].”

On Tuesday, Mr Fadnavis had tweeted a video saying, “By promoting and encouraging such agitations, it is now very clear to what extent the Shiv Sena has stooped for personal greed! [sic]” The video was re-tweeted by several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in the last two days.

On Sunday, hundreds of AMU students protested against the amended Citizenship Act 2019 and clashed with the police. The police later used batons and teargas to disperse them.
