MUMBAI: On the third day of the milk agitation led by the Swabhimani Shetkari Saghtana (SSS), the city has seen less impact compared to other parts of Maharashtra, as the tankers supplying milk in the city have arrived.

The milk vendors claim that since many people have already stocked their refrigerators with milk cartons on the safe side, there is no shortage of milk in the city. The dairy commissioner also said that the supply and stock are adequate.

The milk vendors based in the Mumbai suburbs said that they are receiving adequate supply of milk despite the intensified agitation. However, few milk vendors said that they received a little less supply of milk than what they usually get, but since people have already stocked up  cartons of milk, it did not impact the sale of milk very strongly.

Milk vendor of Santacruz’s Nagori Dairy said, “We have enough supply to get through, but by the end of the day, we are left with no spare milk in case of any emergency.”

Rajeev Jadhav, commissioner of dairy said that in rural area milk collection has been properly done therefore milk distribution has seen no crisis in Mumbai and around the city like Navi Mumbai and Thane. If milk collection continues like today then milk shortage is less likely affect the city.

“There is 20 per cent shortage of milk in the city. We are receiving less number of milk cartons if situation remains same then there will be problem in the future”, said V.N. Jadhav, dealer of Mahananda milk.

Kabita Lotlikar, a secondary teacher said, “I have stopped making curd like I used earlier. I now save the extra milk just in case the milkman does not turn up due to the shortage.”
