MUMBAI: With many people thronging police stations to acquire no-objection certificates (NOC) to rent out property in Mumbai, the Mumbai police on Friday reiterated an order passed in 2015, according to which there is no requirement of an NOC to rent out a flat. The flat owner is only required to intimate the nearest police station, which can also be done via courier, post or email. The police has also asked Mumbaikars to complain to senior officials if asked to do otherwise.

In 2015, the Mumbai police had issued a circular, which stated that no NOC from the local police station, henceforth, would be required to obtain or to let a property on rent in the city. In turn, the landlord would only need to send the agreement copy to the cops through registered post. Earlier, until the circular was issued, any landlord or tenant of the property had to visit the local police station in person to inform the cops about the agreement and submit a copy of the same to the police station. The process was tedious and would take up the whole day, and to do so in a quick manner, the broker/agent used to charge high fees. After the police started this practice, the inconvenience caused to the owner and tenant for renting out premises was eradicated.

The Mumbai police’s Twitter handle on Friday posted a message that read: “There is no requirement of obtaining an NOC from Mumbai Police before renting out your flat/house.”

A senior police official said, “Neither the landlord nor the tenant is required to visit a police station personally. All they have to do is mention the information asked for in the form and courier it to the police station.”
