Mumbai: Although it’s mid-October, the city is still witnessing rains after the end of the four-month-long south-west monsoon season. There have been cloudy skies with high humidity and rain accompanied by thunder and lightning especially in the evenings and at night. These conditions are expected to continue for a few more days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per the weather bureau alert at 2 pm on Monday, the sky will be partly cloudy while light rain or thundershowers are expected in the night. The prediction for Tuesday is also that the sky will be partly cloudy. According to the IMD, the south-west monsoon is currently withdrawing from the Gujarat coast and it may take another few days for it to withdraw from north Konkan, which includes Mumbai.

 K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD, told The Asian Age, “This is going to be the last spell of the south-west monsoon for the city, as there is rise in temperature during daytime which heats up the land and causes convectional rains.  

The south-west monsoon has further withdrawn from entire Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, some more parts of Gujarat, some parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar,” Hosalikar said.

Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the south-west monsoon from some more parts of eastern, central and western India and some parts of north-east India during the next two to three days.
