Mumbai: Amid the cutting of 728 trees near the Nerul wetland, activists Thursday met state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray and urged him to intervene in the matter.
Mistry Construction, with the approval of CIDCO, continued to axe trees near the Nerul wetland for three days. The CIDCO claimed that the felling of trees was legal as against the allegations leveled by the locals.
“The CIDCO claims that pockets D and E of the project site where trees were cut are not part of the petition in the Supreme Court, however in 2018, we had later challenged in court the whole project including the entire wetland area. We told Aaditya that apart from this, the developer had asked for 47 hectares of mangrove stretch for the golf course, which was revealed in RTI reply,” said Sunil Agarwal, an activist.
The environment minister agreed to a site inspection along with forest department and CIDCO officials.
