Mumbai: A controversy erupted on Saturday after Union human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar made a remark about schools seeking fin-ancial help from the government.

While talking in the event organised by Jnan Prabodhihi School in Pu-ne, Mr Javadekar said, “Some schools comes to the government with the begging bowls asking for funds. They can easily ask their alumni for help. It is the duty of the alumni to contribute to the school.”

This statement has irked leaders from the Opposition benches. “This is disrespect to the holy work of education as well as arrogant. Mr Javadekar must immediately extend an apology. There are thousands of schools where teachers and trustees wor-king selflessly to educate the next generations. This statement is hurting the work of those people,” said Mr Chavan.

NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik called the statement as a proof of mentality of the Rash-triya Swayamsevak San-gh. “Mr Javadekar comes from the RSS. When it comes to enhancing the education state with the funds of government, they get irritated. But they should remember that the government money is not their private property,” said Mr Malik.

Senior leader and social activist N.D. Patil, trustee of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha too has commented on Mr Javadekar’s statement. “If he too starts feeling that government money is his personal property and people demanding financial assistance are beggars then it is outragrous. I expect him to apologize,” said Mr Patil.
