Marathis more prone to diabetes: Study

Mumbai: A study conducted by privately-run Gadge Diabetes Centre has found that people belonging to the Maharashtrian, Gujarati, Marwari and Muslim community are more prone to diabetes and among them, 14 per cent youngsters are at higher risk of the disease.

The private centre screened 5,888 people between the ages of 20 to 60 and above from January 2018 to October 2018 for diabetes.

Of the 5,888 people tested, 1,814 people were diagnosed with high sugar. Of these 1,814, 806 were males while 1,008 were females.

The study revealed that Marathis, Gujaratis and Marwaris are more prone to diabetes in comparison to other communities.

Similarly, Muslims are equally prone to the disease. Of the total 1,814 diabetic persons, 418 were Gujaratis, 398 Marathis, 392 Marwaris, 78 south Indians, 98 Punjabis, 69 Bengalis, 278 Muslims and 83 others.
