Mumbai: For the first time this year, organs donated by a 59-year-old brain-dead patient in privately-run Hinduja hospital last week has noted multiple rejections, which led to a death. Cadaver donations of kidney and liver were rejected by two, said officials from the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), which coordinates cadaver organ transplants. A clinical investigation will be necessary to understand why the organs were rejected.

A kidney recipient in P.D. Hinduja hospital is said to be critical and another kidney recipient is on ventilator support at privately-run Jaslok Hospital. A senior citizen who rece-ived the liver of the donor in privately-run Global Hospitals had to undergo a second transplant after the first one failed, the sources revealed.

The ZTCC that coordinates cadaver organ transplants, stated that clinical investigation will be able to provide the details, why the organs were rejected, it’s a rare case.

Sangeeta Desai, transplant co-ordinator ZTCC said, “On September 4, the family of the 59-year-old man had given its consent to donate both his kidneys and liver to the P.D. Hind-uja Hospital. While the liver was donated to Glob-al Hospitals for a senior citizen, one kidney was utilised by Hinduja Hosp-ital and another was sent to Jaslok Hospital as per ZTCC waitlist guidelines.”

In Jaslok Hospital, the kidney transplant was conducted on a 60-year-old patient on September 5. A day later, the doctors removed the donated kidney from Singh as her body rejected it.
