Mumbai: Mumbai rains have surpassed the monthly average of July in the first ten days alone, according to weathermen. From the beginning of the month till July 11, the city recorded 865 mm rainfall against July’s average of 840.7 mm, as per data by Skymet Weather, a private weather agency.

Mumbai received heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours as the Colaba observatory recorded 72.2mm rain while the Santacruz observatory recorded 50.2mm rainfall. The meteorological department said that the rains were evenly distributed throughout the day due to which traffic problems did not occur, however train operations on the central line were affected Thursday morning as trains were late by 30 minutes. “Heavy spells in a few parts of Mumbai are expected in the next 24 hours, however they will not be torrential in nature,” said an official from the IMD.

Meanwhile, Skymet Weather stated that at 865mm, the monthly average of July has already been surpassed in ten days itself, making it the fourth consecutive July with above normal rainfall. July last year saw 868mm rain while this year, by July 11 itself, the monthly mean had been surpassed.

Weathermen have predicted that rains in Mumbai will reduce for now as the monsoon trough has shifted towards the foothills of the Himalayas. “A break monsoon condition is on the cards for the country where Mumbai rains will remain on the milder side for at least about a week now,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president, Skymet Weather.
