Maharashtra govt buys 1,200mw to help fix power issues

The government took immediate measures to reduce the shortage by buying electricity.

Under pressure to deal with the load-shedding, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) purchased 1,200 mw of power.

Mumbai: Amid electricity crisis in Maharashtra, the state government on Sunday bought 1,200 mw on a short-term agreement. This will help reduce shortage of electricity  for a few days. The urban areas in the state and Mumbai suburbs have been facing load-shedding, which has attracted flak from all quarters. The government took immediate measures to reduce the shortage by buying electricity. 

Under pressure to deal with the load-shedding, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) purchased 1,200 mw of power. “This has improved the situation in the state and no load-shedding was conducted today. The demand for the power was 15,400 mw today and the same was supplied. Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company has supplied 4,500 mw, Adani Power Maharashtra Limited has supplied 1,800mw to 2,000mw, RattanIndia 500mw, JSW Energy 300mw, CGPL 560mw, Emco 75mw, wind energy 100 to 200mw, Uran Gas project 270mw, Koyna hydro power 100 to 200mw,” an MSEDCL official said.   

Late on Saturday evening, CM Devendra Fadnavis held an urgent meeting to regularise coal supply to the state. An official said Mr Fadnavis “specifically asked to bring back the situation to normal within seven days.” However, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar alleged that the government had failed to stock up coal despite receiving alerts.
