Mumbai: The Bombay high court Wednesday refused to grant bail to former media baron Peter Mukerjea to recover from heart surgery. The court however granted him permission for post-operative cardiac rehabilitation sessions at the Asian Heart Hospital, where he also underwent the surgery.
Justice Riyaz Chagla, presiding over the vacation bench, refused to grant interim bail to Peter but directed the jail authorities to take him to the private hospital for post-operative rehabilitation sessions.
“The applicant shall be taken to the hospital under police escort for 26 sessions, as prescribed by the Asian Heart Institute,” he said.
Justice Chagla refused to grant Peter bail after it was pointed out to him that as per a report submitted before the special CBI court - which is conducting trial in the 2012 Sheena Bora murder case where Peter is one of the accused facing trial - Peter had recovered from the operation.
Relying upon the hospital’s report, which said that Peter was being discharged from the hospital as he had recovered from the surgery, CBI counsel Ejaz Khan opposed the bail plea.
