State legislature condoles firebrand Amma’s death

A condolence motion for Jayalalithaa was moved in the Assembly as well as Council on Tue during the ongoing winter session of legislature.

Nagpur: ‘The Maharashtra Legislature on Tuesday paid tribute to late Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa with proceedings of both the houses being adjourned for the day. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the funeral of Jayalalithaa in the afternoon.

A condolence motion for Jayalalithaa was moved in the Assembly as well as Council on Tuesday during the ongoing winter session of the legislature. The opposition parties also supported the condolence and the message will be sent to the Tamil Nadu government in this regards.

Moving the motion in the assembly, Mr Fadnavis, “Despite being a political figure she received tremendous love from the people which is very rare. During the last Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, the experts had predicted her defeat because the incumbent government has always been voted out so far. However, she emerged winner and changed the political history of the state. She was very popular with women and has influenced many people,” Mr Fadnavis said.

Congress MLA Patangrao Kadam recalled the pro-people decision taken by her. “When we were in the government, we had suggested that out bureaucrats go to Tamil Nadu and understand the schemes started by her such as the Amma kitchen. She had always taken decisions in favour of the people despite facing political hurdles,” Mr Kadam added.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar said, “She was successful in cultural, social and political fields. Speaker of the House Haribhau Bagde said a copy of the condolence motion would be sent to the Tamil Nadu government.
