Errant socs fined Rs 1 lakh for not sorting waste
The BMC had moved the city magistrate against these societies for not co-operating for waste segregation and composting.
Mumbai: Several prominent government housing colonies in Govandi and Mankhurd have paid the price for not carrying out waste segregation and composting on their premises. The city magistrate has slapped a fine of over Rs 1 lakh on seven such errant societies. It has also given an extension of 30 days to four other societies to comply with the rules.
According to civic officials, the M-East ward had issued notices to 32 prominent housing societies in Chembur, Deonar, Govandi and Mankhurd for not carrying out waste segregation and composting. Of them, 21 societies had taken elaborate measures, whereas 11 societies were found to be evasive. The BMC had moved the city magistrate against these societies for not co-operating for waste segregation and composting.
“The city magistrate has slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 each on seven of these societies, whereas set a deadline of 30 days to four societies for the implementation,” said Shriniwas Kilje, assistant municipal commissioner, M-East ward.
The seven societies that have been penalised are RCF Colony, MSEB Colony, Saras Sahakari Housing Society, Nilkanth Tower Housing Society, Runwal Centre Housing Society, Nityanand Baug Housing Society and Tolaram Nagar Housing Society. The four societies that have been extension are BARC Welfare Society, INS Tanaji (Navy), BEST Colony and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). These societies have given an undertaking to carry out waste segregation and composting in their premises within stipulated time, said Mr Kilje.“It is the first time that housing societies have been fined during the legal process for not carrying out waste segregation and composting,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner (solid waste management). It is compulsory for bulk waste generators to dispose of wet waste on premises.
