Mumbai: In the first rain-related tragedy in Mira Raod, four kids suffered an electric shock, one of them died, after coming into contact with an iron gate while playing in the garden of their residential society on Saturday night.

An 11-year-old girl identified as Shruti Ram Yadav died, while another child, Shradha Surendra Kanojia (12) suffered burn injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital. Her condition is now stable. Pre-monsoon showers accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms had lashed the city on Saturday.

Two other kids who suffered a jolt fortunately escaped unhurt. The deceased girl was a standard fifth student. According to the police, the incident was reported from Sandstone Complex  in the Kanakia area of Mira Road at around 9 pm on Saturday.

While the exact cause is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that current from exposed wires ran through the gate of the garden.

Some residents thronged the Mira Road police station late in the night, seeking action against those responsible for negligence and poor maintenance which had led to the tragedy.

However, no official complaint in this context had been filed so far.

“While investigations are on as to how exactly the current passed through the iron gate, a report from engineers of the Public Works Department is also being awaited. Strict action under the relevant sections of the IPC  will be taken, if we find any type of negligence on part of anyone.” said Senior Police Inspector, Vasant Labdhe.
