Mumbai: An 18-month-old baby girl died after a dumper ran over her Tuesday afternoon at Deonar. The child slipped from her aunt’s lap while the two of them were on a bike being ridden by the deceased’s uncle. Angry residents pelted stones at the dumper and carried out protests in the area. Deonar police had to conduct a lathi-charge control the situation. Police is yet to arrest the accused.

The deceased girl, identified as Aliza Irfan Shaikh, was living with her aunt, Rijwana Shaikh, 42, and uncle, Azaj Abdul Shaikh, 47 since her mother had recently undergone a hernia operation and could not take care of the child.

DCP Shahaji Umap said, “Azaj and Rijwana were going to meet their lawyer for some personal matter. They took Aliza along with them as there was no one at home to take care of her. They both were on a Honda Unicorn bike MH03 bb2958 near Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road at BMC School number 1 when Azaj, who was riding the bike, could not see a speed breaker as it did not have the usual black and white colour. He had to suddenly apply brakes near the breaker when Rijwana, fell down and the small girl slipped from her hands. A dumper ran over the girl who died on the spot.”

Police officials said that several people gathered at the spot, caught the dumper driver and protested. A few of them took Aliza and Rijwana to Sion Hospital however Aliza was declared dead on arrival and Rijwana sustained a serious fracture to her right hand. Dattatray Shinde Senior PI, Deonar police station, said, “We are investigating the case and taking statements of both parties. Azaj told us that it was his fault as his bike slipped because of which the girl fell. But we are still investigating the matter and will arrest the accused soon.”
