Mumbai: A student of Class 9 lost his life on the eve of New Year when a driver of a SUV hit him while attempting to flee from anakabandi Monday.
Thirteen-year-old Mandar Kasekar was waiting for his friends beside a road when the speeding car hit him, killing him on the spot. The incident happened at around 11.30pm at Agarwal Circle.
A few metres away from this spot, the police had placed nakabandi and the driver of the SUV, who was reportedly drunk, fled from the nakabandi. The police was chasing him even as he drove rashly and lost control of his vehicle, hitting Kasekar, a student of Mother Mary School in Nalasopara, who was waiting for his friend alongside the road after parking his scooter. Although the SUV was being driven on the opposite side of the road, due to high speed, the vehicle jumped the divider and crashed into Kasekar. No sooner, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee from the spot but the locals intercepted him and handed him over to the Tuling police.
According to locals who witnessed the incident, the driver was allegedly driving his car in a zigzag manner before jumping the divider. Following the incident, the police has registered a FIR against the driver under relevant sections of the IPC pertaining to rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
